April 14, 2012, Give Kids Sight Day

Give Kids Sight Day

Wills Eye Institute held our inaugural Give Kids Sight Day. We screened nearly 800 children of all ages and provided vision screening, free eye glasses, and full ophthalmic examination where indicated. All of this is at no charge. We will again offer this service to the children in Philadelphia on APRIL 14, 2012. The Eagles Youth Partnership will be on site and provide free glasses to the children who need them.

Especially for children (0-18) who did not have or
did not pass an eye screening this year.

Leading The Way to Blindness Awareness Month

October is officially Blindness Awareness month. Come Walk with us Saturday, September 29, 2012, our "Kick Of To B.A.M."

Blindness Awareness Began with Louis Braille in 1824 when he created a 6 dot code to teach Braille and then again with Helen Keller in 1882 when she became def and blind. Over the years her advocating brought national recognitition to the hearing and visually impaired community.

University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology

Enjoy a exciting new program serving blind and visually impaired visitors at the Penn Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.

Our pilot Touch Tour program takes place in the Lower Egyptian Gallery where ancient Egyptian objects have been selected to be touched and explored. The program begins on Monday, October 1st and runs through Friday, December 14th.
Group tours will take place during two sessions every Monday.
Each session runs for an hour and fifteen minutes.
The first session each Monday is from 10:30 am - 11:45 am, the second session is from 1:00 pm - 2:15 pm.
Each session has space for ten blind or visually impaired visitors plus their companions or guide dogs.

The program includes:
Fifteen minute orientation and tactile experience in a classroom
One hour docent led touch tours of 6 objects
Braille and large print information about the Egyptian Tour
Individual tours will also be available upon request.

A booth will be set up at Liberty Place in Center City, Philadelphia where Associated Services for the Blind employees will be distributing literature, white cane safety posters and White Cane Safety Bracelets.
